93 points, Wine Spectator - Fabulously complex and wonderful truffle, honey, cedar and tobacco box character. Medium to full in body, very sweet and a silky, opulent finish. Stunning.
Ramos-Pinto makes several single-quinta ports, capturing the special qualities of each vineyard in the wine. The Quinta do Bom Retiro is in the Cima-Corgo sub-region on the banks of the Douro at the mouth of the Torto River. Here, 120 acres of 25-year-old vines grow in stony soil between a native forest reserve and groves of olive and almond trees. The vineyard is a patchwork of different planting techniques, with pre-phyloxera vines planted in wide rows with horizontal terraces that follow the natural slope without stone wall buttresses, and still other sections are planted vertically.
Winemaker Notes
The wine is a tawny red color with an amber hue due to its advanced maturity. The nose is spirited and lively, with an array of fruit and nut aromas such as grapefruit, apricot, almond and hazelnut. It reveals spices of cinnamon, caramel, coffee, cocoa, and rich vanilla oak. The wine is charming and velvety on the palate, with a complex sequence of ripe dry fruit followed by a languorous finish.
